Weekly Hydro-meteorological Report, 27, October 2016


Highlights: Wet weather conditions prevailed in many parts of the country during 19th-25th October, with the highest recorded rainfall of 90mm in Kegalle on 24th. Minimum temperature of 15 OC was recorded from Nuwara Eliya district while the maximum temperature between 35-40 OC was recorded from Vavuniya, Mannar and Anuradhapura districts. Up to 30km/h north westerly winds were recorded in the southern half of the country. For the period from 26th October – 1st November the NOAA NCEP model predicts up to 55mm of rainfall for Colombo, Ratnapura, Galle and Matara regions. Up to 15km/h westerly wind is expected in the southern regions of the country.

Highlights: A significant increase in the rainfall events was observed during the previous week from 13th - 18th October compared to the previous week. The highest rainfall of 140 mm for the period was recorded in Kirinda area on 17th. The minimum temperature of 20OC was recorded from Nuwara Eliya district while the maximum temperature was recorded from the northern eastern and south eastern coastal areas to be between 35-40 OC. Up to 30 km/h north westerly winds were recorded in the southern regions of the country. For the period from 19th - 25th October the NOAA NCEP model predicts up to 45 mm rainfall for Galle and Matara districts. Up to 30 km/h north westerly wind is expected in the southern half of the country.

Weekly Hydro-meteorological Report, 13, October 2016


Highlights: Drought conditions were seen throughout the country with only less than 10 mm/day rainfall received mostly by the south-western region of the country. WRF, CFS and GFS rainfall prediction models predict high rainfall after the 15th October. High rainfall (up to 125 mm) is expected in south-western, western and eastern regions of the country. During 12th- 17th very heavy rainfall is expected close to Pottuvil. The tropical pacific SST anomaly is close to -0.5 OC (weak La Niña threshold). A La Niña in October- November period usually results in very dry weather in Sri Lanka. MJO shall be in the western-Pacific during the next 15 days and shall suppress rainfall in Sri Lanka.

Highlights: An increase in the rainfall events was observed during the previous week from 28th September - 4th October compared to the previous week. The highest rainfall of 140 mm for the period was recorded in Ahungalla area on 28th. The minimum temperature of 20OC was recorded from Nuwara Eliya district while the maximum temperature was recorded from the northern eastern coastal areas to be between 35-40OC.Up to 35 km/h north westerly winds were recorded in the southern regions of the country. For the period from 12th - 18th October the NOAA NCEP model predicts up to 25 mm rainfall for the western regions of the island. Up to 55 km/h north westerly wind is expected in the southern part of the country.
