Monitoring and Prediction
Frequent variation of heavy rainfall is expected for East, & South-eastern regions of Sri Lanka, for the period of 30th January-4th February. However, during the first 2 weeks of February the rainfall shall be comparatively lower than the rainfall observed during month of January.

Highlights
Monitoring and Prediction
Very heavy rainfall is expected for East, & South-eastern Sri Lanka, and heavy rainfall shall be experienced in the rest of the country, for the period of 23rd-28th January. The monthly predictions indicate substantial amount of rainfall for the entire country around 28th-30th January. However, prevailing rainfall condition shall start to diminish after 24th January and shall persist during the first two weeks of February.

The Climate over Sri Lanka during Yala of 2012
Large parts of the island were under drought this “Yala” which refers to the cultivation season that starts after the April-May rains. Impacts of droughts have led to shortages in drinking water in some areas and wells and rivers drying up and clapped landscapes. The water levels in hydro-power generating catchments dropped precipitously. There have been regular power-cuts affecting household, industrial, services and office work. Farmers have been affected in large swathes of the island particularly in Polonnaruwa, Anurhadhapura, Ampara and Batticaloa districts.

Monitoring and Prediction
Heavy rainfall shall diminish during 9th-15th January for the entire country. However, significant amount of rainfall shall be received for the southern 2/3rd of Sri Lanka during 8th-13th January. The monthly predictions point to an Extreme amount of rainfall for the entire country around 22nd-24th. Extreme rainfall shall persist from 22nd till end of January.

Monitoring and Prediction
Heavy rainfall accumulation is expected for the 6th-12thJanuary for the North-eastern regions of Sri Lanka and moderate rainfall is expected for the rest of the island. Hambantota, Monaragala, Ampara and few regions of Batticaloa districts shall receive heavy rainfall for the 5th-10th January 2013. The monthly predictions point to significantly high rainfall around 22nd-25th January for the entire country, however higher amount of rainfall shall expect for the western slopes of Sri Lanka.

Rainfall accumulation of more than 135 mm is expected for the 2nd-8thJanuary for the entire country. 1/3rd of Southern Sri Lanka shall receive extremely heavy rainfall, and heavy showers shall be experienced in the remaining regions of Sri Lanka. The monthly predictions point to significantly high rainfall on the 22nd of January for the entire country, however considerable amount of rainfall shall persists during the month of January for entire Sri Lanka.
