Weekly Hydro-meteorological Report, 29, December 2016


Highlights:

  •  The IMD WRF model predicts rainfall up to 35 mm on 30th December in northern and eastern parts of the island.  
  •  Between Dec 20–26: highest rainfall of 50 mm was recorded on the 26th in the surrounding regions of Padawiya in Anuradhapura district.
  •  From Dec 18–24: minimum temperature of 15 OC was recorded from Nuwara Eliya district while many parts of the island recorded a maximum temperature between 30-35 OC.
  •  From Dec 20–26: up to 18 km/h north easterly winds were experienced by the entire island.

  •  Between Dec 13–19: highest rainfall of 100 mm was recorded on the 19th in the surrounding regions of Illavankulam in Puttalam district.
  •  From Dec 11–17: minimum temperature of 15 OC was recorded from Nuwara Eliya district while many parts of the island recorded a maximum temperature between 30-35 OC.
  •  From Dec 13–19: up to 10 km/h north easterly winds were experienced in the northern and southern regions of the island.

  •  From Nov 27 – Dec 3, Minimum temperature of 15 OC was recorded from Nuwara Eliya district while most parts of the island recorded a maximum temperature between 30-35 OC.
  •  From Nov 29 – Dec 5, up to 18 km/h north easterly winds were experienced in Jaffna, Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu regions while rest of the island experienced north westerly wind with speeds less than 10 km/h.

  •  The IMD WRF model predicts heavy rainfall (up to 125 mm) on 2nd December in the northern sea adjacent to the island.  
  •  A Significant decrease in rainfall events was experienced throughout the island during 23–28 November, with the highest recorded rainfall of 60 mm on the 23rd in Mannampitiya region.
  •  From 20-26 November, Minimum temperature of 15 OC was recorded from Nuwara Eliya district while most parts of the island recorded a maximum temperature between 30-35 OC.
  •  From 22-28 November, up to 18 km/h north easterly winds were experienced in the northern and southern regions of the country while the central regions received up to 22 km/h wind in the same direction.

The NOAA NCEP model predicts heavy rainfall (up to 125 mm) from 23rd– 29th November for the coastal regions of Colombo. Heavy rainfall events were experienced throughout the island during 16–22 November, with the highest recorded rainfall of 140 mm on the 22nd in Hanwella and Giriulla. Minimum temperature of 15 OC was recorded from Nuwara Eliya district while most parts of the island recorded a maximum temperature between 30-35 OC. Up to 20 km/h north easterly winds were experienced by the entire country.

Highlights: South western regions of the country experienced heavy rainfall during the latter part of previous week from 9th–15th November. The highest rainfall of 100 mm for the period was recorded in Imaduwa region on 14th. Minimum temperature of 15 OC was recorded from Nuwara Eliya district while most parts of the island recorded a maximum temperature between 30-35 OC .Up to 20 km/h north easterly winds were recorded in the southern region of the country. For the period after the 16th, November the NOAA NCEP model predicts up to 135 mm of rainfall for Sri Lanka outside the South with highest values in the North, East, North-Central regions.

The highest rainfall of 90 mm for the period was recorded in adjacent south eastern sea on 3rd. Minimum temperature of 15 OC was recorded from Nuwara Eliya district while most parts of the island recorded a maximum temperature between 30-35 OC Up to 20 km/h north westerly winds were recorded in the southern region of the country. Highlights: Heavy rainfalls were observed throughout the country during the latter part of the previous week from 26th October -1st November. The highest rainfall of 160mm for the period was recorded in Galle and Matara on 30th. Minimum temperature of 15 OC was recorded from Nuwara Eliya district while the maximum temperature between 35-40 OCwas recorded from Trincomalee. Up to 20km/h north westerly winds were recorded in the Southern province. For the period from 2nd– 8th November the NOAA NCEP model predicts up to 85mm of rainfall for Colombo and adjacent sea regions. Up to 18km/h north westerly wind is expected in the whole country.

Highlights: Wet weather conditions prevailed in many parts of the country during 19th-25th October, with the highest recorded rainfall of 90mm in Kegalle on 24th. Minimum temperature of 15 OC was recorded from Nuwara Eliya district while the maximum temperature between 35-40 OC was recorded from Vavuniya, Mannar and Anuradhapura districts. Up to 30km/h north westerly winds were recorded in the southern half of the country. For the period from 26th October – 1st November the NOAA NCEP model predicts up to 55mm of rainfall for Colombo, Ratnapura, Galle and Matara regions. Up to 15km/h westerly wind is expected in the southern regions of the country.

Highlights: A significant increase in the rainfall events was observed during the previous week from 13th - 18th October compared to the previous week. The highest rainfall of 140 mm for the period was recorded in Kirinda area on 17th. The minimum temperature of 20OC was recorded from Nuwara Eliya district while the maximum temperature was recorded from the northern eastern and south eastern coastal areas to be between 35-40 OC. Up to 30 km/h north westerly winds were recorded in the southern regions of the country. For the period from 19th - 25th October the NOAA NCEP model predicts up to 45 mm rainfall for Galle and Matara districts. Up to 30 km/h north westerly wind is expected in the southern half of the country.

Weekly Hydro-meteorological Report, 13, October 2016


Highlights: Drought conditions were seen throughout the country with only less than 10 mm/day rainfall received mostly by the south-western region of the country. WRF, CFS and GFS rainfall prediction models predict high rainfall after the 15th October. High rainfall (up to 125 mm) is expected in south-western, western and eastern regions of the country. During 12th- 17th very heavy rainfall is expected close to Pottuvil. The tropical pacific SST anomaly is close to -0.5 OC (weak La Niña threshold). A La Niña in October- November period usually results in very dry weather in Sri Lanka. MJO shall be in the western-Pacific during the next 15 days and shall suppress rainfall in Sri Lanka.

The highest rainfall of 140 mm for the period was recorded in Ahungalla area on 28th. The minimum temperature of 20OC was recorded from Nuwara Eliya district while the maximum temperature was recorded from the northern eastern coastal areas to be between 35-40OC.Up to 35 km/h north westerly winds were recorded in the southern regions of the country. For the period from 12th - 18th October the NOAA NCEP model predicts up to 25 mm rainfall for the western regions of the island. Up to 55 km/h north westerly wind is expected in the southern part of the country.

Highlights: Dry weather conditions were experienced throughout the island during the previous week from 20th-26th September. Less than 10 mm rainfall was received by Ratnapura and Trincomalee regions. The minimum temperature of 20 OC was recorded from Nuwara Eliya district while the maximum temperature was recorded from the Northern and Eastern coastal areas to be between 35-40 OC. Up to 55 km/h north westerly winds were recorded in the southern regions of the country. For the period from 27th September - 11th October the NOAA NCEP model predicts dry weather conditions in the island. Up to 35 km/h north westerly wind is expected in the southern and western parts of the country. ENSO is still in the neutral phase and therefore shall not support rainfall conditions in Sri Lanka. MJO shall also suppress rainfall in the country in the next two weeks. Therefore the weather has a higher tendency to be dry over the next month.

Highlights: Mixed weather conditions were experienced in the previous week from 14th-20th September in the island. Eastern sea near the island received heavy rainfall on 15th with sea region near Batticaloa receiving up to 180 mm. The highest rainfall of 30 mm for the period was recorded close to Beligalla and Padiyathalawa near the Badulla Ampara district border. The minimum temperature of 20 OC was recorded from Nuwara Eliya district while the maximum temperature was recorded from the North Eastern coastal areas to be between 35-40 OC. Up to 35 km/h north westerly winds were recorded in the entire country. For the period from 22th-27th the NOAA NCEP model predicts dry weather conditions in the island. Up to 55 km/h north westerly wind is expected in the southern half of the country. In the central regions up to 55 km/h westerly wind is expected.

Hydro-meteorological Highlights , 19, September 2016

Highlights :Mostly dry weather conditions were experienced in the previous week from 10th-17th September along with slight rainfall in some areas. Highest rainfall of 60 mm was recorded from Kirama area close to Matara Hambantota border on the 12th. On the 15th up to 20 mm of rainfall was recorded in Mutur, Baduluwewa and Inginiyagala while the surrounding regions received up to 15 mm of rainfall. On the same day up to 90 mm of rainfall is shown in the eastern sea close to Vakarai. Within the week the RFE 2.0 tool shows total rainfall of between 50-75 mm near Kirama area close to Matara-Hambantota border, 10-25 mm in Trincomalee, Seruwawila and Trikonamadua areas in the Eastern Province and Ratnapura town and nearby areas. It also shows 5-10 mm of total rainfall in several areas of Kegalle and Ratnapura districts and rainfall of less than 5 mm in several areas in the Anuradhapura district and Ampara district. During the week the minimum temperature of 15-20 OC was recorded in Nuwara Eliya while the maximum temperature was recorded in the North Eastern region of the country that includes Jaffna, Mullaitivu, Trincomalee and Vavuniya districts. Up to 55 km/h north westerly wind was experienced by the Southern province while the rest of the island experienced 36 km/h north westerly winds. The IMD GFS models predicts dry weather conditions in the coming week from 19th-25th except rainfall in some areas in the south western side of the country. The model predicts between 10-20 mm of rainfall in Kalutara, Galle and close by areas and the adjacent sea on 19th-21st and 24th-25th. On 21st between 10-20 mm of rainfall is predicted in Colombo as well. On 22nd between 10-20 mm of rainfall is expected in Kokkilai, Pulmoddai and surrounding areas. In the coming week up to 55 km/h north westerly wind is expected in southern and sabaragamuwa provinces while the rest of the country other than the northern region may experience up to 36 km/h north westerly winds. Kurunegala, Matale and Polonnaruwa districts may experience south westerly winds.

Up to 10 mm of rainfall was recorded from the Eastern sea and several areas in the eastern side of the country during the first few days of the week. The minimum temperature of 20 OC was recorded from Nuwara Eliya district while the maximum temperature was recorded from the North Eastern and Eastern coastal areas to be between 35-40 OC. Up to 55 km/h north westerly winds were recorded in the Southern areas of the country. For the period from 14th-20th the NOAA NCEP model predicts dry weather conditions in the island. Highlights :Dry weather conditions were experienced in the previous week from 5th-11th September. Slight rainfall of less than 10 mm were experienced by the north eastern sea on 6th , 7th and 11th. On 7th less than 10 mm of rainfall was experienced by the Northern Province, Kurunegala, Kandy and Polonnaruwa districts. On 8th up to 10 mm of rainfall was recorded in the south eastern and south western sea. On the 10th up to 10 mm of rainfall was experienced by the western province, Galle and Matara districts and the western sea. In the previous week minimum temperature was reported in Nuwara Eliya while the maximum temperature was recorded in the Eastern Coastal belt to be between 35-40 OC. Up to 55 km/h north westerly wind was experienced by the Uva, Southern and Sabaragamuwa provinces while the rest of the country experienced up to 36 km/h north westerly winds. In the week from 13th-19th mostly dry weather conditions are expected in the country. On 13th,14th and 17th between 10-20 mm of rainfall is expected in the western province and the western sea. Up to 55 km/h north westerly wind is expected in the southern half of the country while up to 36 km/h north westerly and south westerly winds are expected in the northern half of the country.

Highlights: Dry conditions were mostly seen throughout the county in the previous week. The highest recorded rainfall in the week was on the 2nd which was less than 20 mm in the Northern regions of the country. As expected, the lowest temperature was recorded in Nuwara Eliya to be between 15- 20 OC while the maximum temperature was recorded from the North Eastern coastal belt to be between 35-40 OC. 0-1 OC above average temperature anomaly was experienced throughout the country. Up to 55 km/h north westerly wind was experienced in the lower half of the island. Considerably wet weather conditions are expected in the Northern province from 7th-13th September. Up to 35 mm of rainfall is expected close to Jaffna and Kilinochchi including the adjacent sea. Up to 55 km/h north westerly wind is expected in the southern part of the island.

Hydro-meteorological Highlights , 5, September 2016

Highlights :Wet weather conditions were experienced in the previous week from 28th August to 3rd September especially in the northern and north eastern regions of the island. On the 28th up to 40 mm of rainfall was recorded in the Trincomalee, up to 30 mm of rain was recorded in Pulmudai and Trincomalee towns while the rest of the Trincomalee, Vavuniya and Mullaitivu districts experienced up to 20 mm of rainfall. On 30th up to 40 mm of rainfall was recorded in the Jaffna sea a few kilometers away from the island. On the 31st up to 30 mm of rainfall was recorded in Jaffna district, close to Ullukulama in the border of Anuradhapura and Vavuniya districts, Ratnapura area and in the South eastern sea close to Galle. On the same day up to 20 mm of rainfall was recorded in Kilinochchi, Ratnapura, Kalutara, Galle and in the border of Ratnapura, Moneragala and Hambanthota. On 2nd up to 20 mm of rainfall was recorded close to Pooneryn in Kilinochchi district. The RFE 7 tool shows 25-50 mm above normal rainfall in the Jaffna district for the previous week. The lowest temperature was recorded from Nuwara Eliya district to be between 15-20 OC while the maximum temperature was recorded from Mullaitivu and Trincomalee areas to be between 35-40 OC. The entire country experienced up to 55 km/h north westerly wind except the northern region. The IMD GFS model predicts dry weather in the coming week from 5th- 11th September except 10-20 mm of rainfall in the western sea on 11th. Wind speed is expected to be reduced at the 800 mb level and up to 36 km/h north westerly wind is expected all over the island except in the northern region.

Highlights: During the previous week, wet weather conditions were experienced by Jaffna and Kilinochchi districts of the country. On 26th up to 35 mm of rainfall was recorded in Jaffna. As expected, the lowest temperature was recorded in Nuwara Eliya to be between 15- 20 0C. The maximum temperature of between 35-4O 0C was recorded in the northern and eastern coastal belt. Up to 55 km/h north westerly wind was experienced by the Southern and Central regions of the country. No extreme weather conditions were experienced by the country in the month of August. Wet weather conditions are expected in the Northern Province in the week from 1st-7th September. Up to 55 km/h north westerly wind is expected in the southern region of the country including North Western and Uva provinces.

Highlights: During the previous week from 18th-24th August, slightly wet weather conditions were expected in certain areas of the country. On 24th 78.5 mm of rainfall was recorded from Jaffna. Lowest temperature was recorded in Nuwara Eliya to be between 15-20 0C while the maximum temperature was recorded from the eastern coastal belt to be between 35-40 0C. 1-3 0C above average temperature anomaly was experienced throughout the country except in Nuwara Eliya. Up to 55 km/h north westerly wind was experienced in the lower half of the country including Kurunegala district. Considerably wet weather conditions are expected in Kalutara and Galle areas for the week from 25th-31st August. Up to 70 mm of rainfall is expected close to Beruwala and Bentota for the period from 25-28th. Up to 40 mm of rainfall is expected in surrounding areas from 25th-31st August. Up to 55 km/h north westerly wind is expected in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and Uva provinces.

Highlights :The week from 12th-18th August was slightly wet compared to the previous week. Rainfall less than 10 mm was experienced by several districts including Mannar, Vavuniya, Mullaitivu, Kegalle, Kandy, Gampaha, Kurunegala and Ratnapura. The highest rainfall for the week was recorded on 14th in the border of Kegalle and Nuwara Eliya with a rainfall of 20 mm. For the period from 14th-20th August lowest temperature was recorded in Nuwara Eliya to be between 15-20 OC while the maximum temperature was recorded from the eastern coastal belt to be between 25-40 OC. Overall the entire country has experienced 1-3 OC increase in temperature above normal conditions. For the period from 13th-19th August up to 54 km/h north westerly wind was experienced by the entire island. For the coming week from 22nd-28th August wet weather conditions are expected in Kalutara, Galle and Moneragala districts. On 22nd between 20-40 mm of rainfall is expected close to Moneragala and Buttala. On 23rd up to 40 mm of rainfall is expected in Colombo, Kalutara, Galle and the adjacent sea and close to Maskeliya. For the period from 23rd-26th up to 20 mm of rainfall is expected in the western province and the adjacent sea. On 27th up to 20 mm of rainfall is expected close to Beruwala, Bentota and the adjacent ocean. Considerably high rainfall is expected on 28th . On that day between 40-70 mm of rainfall is expected in the coastal areas of Colombo and the adjacent sea and up to 40 mm of rainfall is expected in the rest of the western province, western sea and Galle district. On the same day 10-20 mm of rainfall is expected in Moneragala and in the north eastern coastal areas including Trincomalee, Mullaitivu and Chundikulum. Maximum temperature is expected in Ampara district to be between 35-40 OC while minimum temperature is expected in Nuwara Eliya to be between 15-20 OC. Up to 54 km/h north westerly wind is expected in the southern half of the country.

Highlights: Mostly dry weather conditions prevailed in the previous week for the period from 3rd-6th while considerable rainfall was experienced by Badulla district in the last two days. Highlights :Dry weather conditions prevailed in the previous week from 31st July to 6th August. The RFE 2.0 model shows a rainfall deficit of 10-25% in the South Western side of the island. The lowest temperature was reported from Nuwara Eliya to be around 20 OC while the maximum temperature was recorded from the eastern coastal belt of the island to be between 35-40 OC. During the previous week the temperature of the entire country was 1-3 OC above normal. Westerly wind with speed of 36-55 km/h was recorded all over the country. For the week from 8th-14th August, mostly dry weather conditions are expected in the earlier part of the week. Between 10-20 mm of rainfall are expected on 9th and 13th close to Kalutara district. On 14th up to 40 mm of rainfall is expected in the Western Province and the western sea while up to 20 mm of rainfall is expected in Gampaha, Galle and the adjacent sea. Maximum temperature is expected from the Northern and North Central provinces to be between 35-40 OC while the lowest temperature is expected from Nuwara Eliya and Bandarawela to be between 15-20 OC. Up to 36 km/h north westerly wind is expected in Southern, Western, and Sabaragamuwa provinces and Nuwara Eliya and Moneragala areas while up to 28 km/h south westerly wind is expected in Kurunegala, Kandy, Matale and Ampara areas.

Hydro-meteorological Highlights ,1, August 2016

Highlights :Considerable rainfall was recorded in several areas throughout the previous week. On the 24th 30 mm of rainfall was recoded close to Padiyathalawa and in the southern sea close to Matara. Heavy rainfall was recorded on 25th. On that day 50 mm of rainfall was recorded close to Trincomalee and in Yala National Park region while up to 40mm of rainfall was recorded in Gomarankadawala, Nilaweli, western region of Mullaitivu district, Omantai, Gal Oya and several regions in Moneragala close to Yala National Park. On the same day up to 30 mm of rainfall was recorded in Anuradhapura district, Polonnaruwa district, Vavuniya, Mullaitivu, Trincomale and adjacent sea and lower part of Moneragala district. On 26th the rainfall that had spread over a wide area on the previous day was seen to have concentrated to a few districts. On that day, up to 60 mm of rainfall was recorded close to Palammoodaikullum in the intersection between Mannar and Vavuniya while between 30-50 mm of rainfall was recorded in the border of Mannar, Vavuniya and Mulativu districts and in Kurunegala and Matale districts. On 27th between 30- 40 mm of rainfall was received by Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa districts while on 28th between 30-40 mm of rainfall was recorded in Vavuniya district. Heavy rainfall was recorded throughout the southern half of the island on 29th with recordings of between 20-50 mm of rainfall. Less rainfall was recorded on 30th compared to the past few days of the week. For the week from 1st-7th August, up to 40 mm of rainfall is expected in the coastal areas in Galle on 1st. No rainfall is expected in the island during the rest of the week. For the coming week, minimum temperature is expected in Nuwara Eliya to be between 15-20 OC while maximum temperature is expected in the Eastern region of the island to be between 35-40 OC. The maximum temperature of Central and Western provinces are expected to lie between 25-30 OC while that of Kurunegala and Puttalam districts will be between 30-35 OC. Between 36-54 km/h westerly and north westerly wind is expected throughout the island at 850 mb level.

Hydro-meteorological Highlights ,25, July 2016

Highlights : During the previous week, the overall weather was dry except on 17th, 19th and 23rd. On the 17th 30 mm of rainfall was recorded in Passara and 20 mm of rainfall was received by the surrounding areas including Badulla town. On the 19th 20 mm of rainfall was received by Kahatagasdigiliya and Tammennawa areas in Anuradhapura district and 15 mm of rainfall was received by adjacent areas. Up to 15 mm of rainfall was recorded in Avissawella and Deraniyagala areas while less than 10 mm was received by Kalutara, Colombo , Nuawara Eliya and upper Ratnapura areas on 23rd. During the week from 17-23rd July, lowest temperature of 15-20 oC was recorded in Nuwara Eliya while maximum temperature of 25-40 oC was recorded in Eastern side of the country. 28-36 km/h north westerly wind was observed at the 850 mb level. Considerable rainfall is expected in the week from 25th-31st July. On 25th 70-140 mm of rainfall is expected in the western sea a few kilometers away from Colombo and Kalutara while up to 70 mm of rainfall is expected in the remaining parts of the western sea. On the same day up to 40 mm of rainfall is expected in Mulativu and 10-20 mm of rainfall is expected in the Eastern side of the country and Moneragala area. Heavy rainfall is expected in several areas of the country on 26th. On that day, 70-140 mm of rainfall is expected in western sea close to Gampaha and up to 70 mm of rainfall is expected in the western and south western coastal band including Chilaw, Colombo, Kalutara, Beruwala, Galle and the adjacent sea. On the same day, up to 70 mm rainfall is expected close to Balangoda and Nuwara Eliya and up to 40 mm of rainfall is expected in the adjacent areas as well as in Badulla and Moneragala. Very heavy rainfall is expected in western coastal band and the western sea on the 27th. Up to 140 mm rainfall is expected in the western sea close to Gampaha and Colombo and up to 70 mm rainfall is expected in the remaining part of the western sea and the western coastal band from Chilaw to Galle. Up to 40 mm of rainfall is expected close to Nuwara Eliya and Ratnapura and the sea adjacent to Mulaltivu and Trincomalee towns. From 28th-29th Up to 40 mm rainfall is expected in the western coastal towns including Chilaw, Colombo and Galle and the adjacent sea. The intensity of the rainfall is seen to be decreasing on the 30th. Up to 40 mm rainfall is expected in the sea close to Colombo and Kalutara while rainfall of less than 20 mm is expected in the rest of the western sea and the coastal belt. As usual, lowest temperature is expected in Nuwara Eliya to be around 15-20 oC and maximum temperature is expected in the eastern side of the island to be around 35-40 oC. 20-28 km/h westerly wind is expected in the lower half of the country at 850 mb level.

Weekly Hydro-meteorological Report, 21, July 2016


Highlights: Dry weather persisted in the country during 13th- 19th July and therefore the average rainfall deficit in the country has increased up to 60 mm. Heavy rainfall was only seen in Kantale/ Aralaganvila and Badulla areas. Above average rainfall was only received in Badulla region. Extreme rainfall was seen in the sea off the coast of Arugambay. Highest temperature was reported in the eastern side of the country while minimum temperature as usual was reported in Nuwara Eliya region. Reduced wind speed (only up to 20 km/h) was seen at the 700 mb level while up to 55 km/h wind was seen at the 850 mb level. NOAA NCEP and IRI CFS models does not expect much rainfall in the next two weeks but IMD WRF and GFS models predict heavy rainfall in Western and South-western regions in the next week. MJO is also expected to be present in the Indian ocean region which shall enhance rainfall condition in the country.

Hydro-meteorological Highlights ,18, July 2016

Highlights : During the previous week, slight rainfall was seen in the south western region of the country in the first three days (from 9th-12th). Over the next few days rainfall had shifted towards the south eastern and eastern sides of the island. Maximum rainfall was recorded on 14th. On that day 50 mm of rain was received close to Arawa and 30 mm of rain was received in Badulla and adjacent areas. On 15th, 30 mm of rain was recorded in the Eastern region of Polonnaruwa. During the week from 10th-16th July, lowest temperature of 15-20 OC was recorded in Nuwara Eliya while maximum temperature was recorded in the Eastern side of the country to be between 35-40 OC. 10-15 m/s westerly wind was observed at the 850 mb level. No rainfall is expected for the period from 18th-24th except on 18th, 21st and 24th. On 18th, 20-40 mm of rainfall is expected in the western sea and on the 21st rainfall of 10-20 mm is expected close to Moneragala. On the 24th 20-40 mm of rainfall is expected in the western sea close to Colombo and Kalutara. For the period from 19th-25th, lowest temperature is expected in Nuwara Eliya while maximum temperature is expected in the Eastern region of the country to be between 35-40 OC.

Highlights: Mostly less than 10 mm rainfall was seen in the country in the period from 6th-8th. However, on the 9th, 70 mm of rainfall was recorded in Puttalam and considerable rainfall was seen in Alawwa, Nttambuwa and adjoining areas. Within the week from 6th-11th, highest temperature of 35-40 0C was recorded in the Eastern part of the country while the minimum temperature was recorded in Nuwara Eliya. High wind speed of 15-20 m/s was recorded in the central region of the island. Heavy rainfall is expected in the sea close to Kalutara in the coming week from 14th-20th. Up to 70mm of rainfall is expected in Beruwala and Kalutara areas. The rest of the western province as a whole will experience up to 40mm of rainfall. Ratnapura and Gampaha districts too shall experience rainfall in the coming week. The wind speed will remain at 10-15 m/s.  MJO shall be in the Indian Ocean and therefore it shall enhance rainfall condition in Sri Lanka.

Weekly Hydro-meteorological Report, 7, July 2016

Highlights: Dry conditions were mostly seen throughout the county in the previous week. The only recorded rainfall in the week was on the 29th June which was less than 10 mm in south-western and central regions of the country. In June 2016 the entire country received less than average rainfall with the south-western region of the country receiving 20- 50% below normal and the rest of the country receiving more than 75% below normal rainfall. Due to this, the average rainfall deficit in the entire country has increase up to 30 mm by the 5th July. Rainfall is only expected in the south western region of the country during the next week and extreme rainfall events are not expected. Strong wind is expected in the southern half of the country and the highest temperature is expected in the eastern and north-eastern regions of the country. MJO is weak.

Highlights: The entire country received low rainfall during the previous week except the sea adjacent to North Eastern side of the island.  During the previous week maximum temperature of 35-40 0C was seen along the eastern coastal belt while the minimum temperature of 200 C was recorded in Nuwara Eliya. NOAA NCEP models predict up to 55mm total rainfall in the Ratnapura town in the next week while Colombo may experience up to 45mm rainfall. NOAA CPC GFS model predicts 35- 40 0C maximum temperature along the coastal region in the eastern side of the island. Wind speed is expected to remain at 15m/s throughout the country and the surrounding sea. MJO shall enhance rainfall conditions up to 5 days ahead and thereafter shall suppress.

Highlights: The entire country received below average rainfall during the previous week except the south-western region of the country. During the previous week maximum temperature of 35-400C was seen along the eastern coastal belt while the minimum temperature of 200 C was recorded in NuwaraEliya.NOAA NCEP models predict up to 55mm total rainfall in the western province in the next week while other regions shall have up to 45mm rainfall. NOAA CPC GFS model predicts 35- 40 0C maximum temperature along the coastal region in the eastern side of the island.Higher wind speed (up to 20 m/s) is expected throughout the country and the surrounding sea. MJO shall enhance rainfall conditions up to 10 days ahead and thereafter shall suppress. ENSO is neutral and therefore the impact on the rainfall is minimal. La Nina conditions are expected to develop by late June which shall slightly enhance rainfall in the country during July and August.

Highlights : In the previous week, the highest rainfall was seen around Wennappuwa on the 12th as up to  90 mm while south western and north eastern sea regions experienced slight rainfall during 17th- 18th June. NOAA NCEP models predict up to 115 mm rainfall in south western region of the country during next week while WRF model predicts up to 125 mm rainfall in Kegalle district and surrounding regions on the 22nd. Up to 100 mm total rainfall is also expected around Colombo and Kalutara during 19th-24th June. North eastern sea region of the country shall be experienced a very heavy rainfall condition during  19th-24th June. NOAA CPC GFS model predicts 35 - 40 0C maximum temperature between western and southern coastal regions while lowest as 15-20 0C around Nuwara Eliya and hill country. The wind shall be increased in the next week. The models at both 850 mb and 700 mb levels predict 20 m/s of north westerly wind in the entire country except northern region during the week.

Higher wind speed (up to 20 m/s) is expected in the southern regions and the sea. MJO shall be in the Indian Ocean and shall contribute to enhance the rainfall in the region.

The Indian Ocean is alive with tropical activity today, May 10, as there's a tropical storm in both the northern and southern oceans. Tropical Cyclone Jamala (formerly 24S) and newborn Tropical Cyclone 01B were both captured on one image from NASA's Terra satellite today.
