Weekly Hydro-meteorological Report, 30, June 2016

Highlights: The entire country received low rainfall during the previous week except the sea adjacent to North Eastern side of the island.  During the previous week maximum temperature of 35-40 0C was seen along the eastern coastal belt while the minimum temperature of 200 C was recorded in Nuwara Eliya. NOAA NCEP models predict up to 55mm total rainfall in the Ratnapura town in the next week while Colombo may experience up to 45mm rainfall. NOAA CPC GFS model predicts 35- 40 0C maximum temperature along the coastal region in the eastern side of the island. Wind speed is expected to remain at 15m/s throughout the country and the surrounding sea. MJO shall enhance rainfall conditions up to 5 days ahead and thereafter shall suppress.

Weekly Hydro-meteorological Report, 23, June 2016

Highlights: The entire country received below average rainfall during the previous week except the south-western region of the country. During the previous week maximum temperature of 35-400C was seen along the eastern coastal belt while the minimum temperature of 200 C was recorded in NuwaraEliya.NOAA NCEP models predict up to 55mm total rainfall in the western province in the next week while other regions shall have up to 45mm rainfall. NOAA CPC GFS model predicts 35- 40 0C maximum temperature along the coastal region in the eastern side of the island.Higher wind speed (up to 20 m/s) is expected throughout the country and the surrounding sea. MJO shall enhance rainfall conditions up to 10 days ahead and thereafter shall suppress. ENSO is neutral and therefore the impact on the rainfall is minimal. La Nina conditions are expected to develop by late June which shall slightly enhance rainfall in the country during July and August.

Hydro-meteorological Highlights , 20, June 2016

Highlights : In the previous week, the highest rainfall was seen around Wennappuwa on the 12th as up to  90 mm while south western and north eastern sea regions experienced slight rainfall during 17th- 18th June. NOAA NCEP models predict up to 115 mm rainfall in south western region of the country during next week while WRF model predicts up to 125 mm rainfall in Kegalle district and surrounding regions on the 22nd. Up to 100 mm total rainfall is also expected around Colombo and Kalutara during 19th-24th June. North eastern sea region of the country shall be experienced a very heavy rainfall condition during  19th-24th June. NOAA CPC GFS model predicts 35 - 40 0C maximum temperature between western and southern coastal regions while lowest as 15-20 0C around Nuwara Eliya and hill country. The wind shall be increased in the next week. The models at both 850 mb and 700 mb levels predict 20 m/s of north westerly wind in the entire country except northern region during the week.

Highlights: Previous week was dry except rainfall during 8th -9th and 12th of June mostly in the south western region. The highest rainfall up to 90 mm was seen around Balangoda on the 9th. The Temperature was highest (35- 40 0C) in the eastern coastal area and was lowest in the hill country (15- 20 0C) in the previous week. NOAA NCEP models predict up to 135mm total rainfall in south western region in the next week while other regions shall have up to 85mm rainfall. NOAA CPC GFS model predicts 35- 40 0C maximum temperature along the coastal region between Kilinochchi and Hambantota during the next week. Higher wind speed (up to 20 m/s) is expected in the southern regions and the sea. MJO shall be in the Indian Ocean and shall contribute to enhance the rainfall in the region.

Hydro-meteorological Highlights , 13, June 2016

Highlights :Rainfall received only in south western region of the country during the previous week.Considerable rainfall was seen during 7th- 9th June with the highest recorded 90 mm of rainfall near Balangoda on the 9th. NOAA NCEP models predict up to 125 mm rainfall in south western region of the country during next week while WRF model predicts up to 65 mm rainfall in next two days in the same region. Up to 100 mm total rainfall is also expected around Colombo and Kalutara during 12th-17th June. NOAA CPC GFS model predicts 40 - 45 0C maximum temperature near Ampara town and surrounding regions while the models at 850 mb and 700 mb levels forecast 15 m/s of wind during next week.

Highlights: Previous week was dry except rainfall on the 3rd and 7th of June. The highest rainfall up to 70 mm was seen around Balangoda on the 3rd. The Temperature was highest (35- 40 0C) in the eastern coastal area and was lowest in the hill country (15- 20 0C) in the previous week. NOAA NCEP models predict up to 125mm total rainfall in south western region in the next week while other regions shall have up to 85mm rainfall. NOAA CPC GFS model predicts 35- 40 0C maximum temperature near Ampara town and surrounding regions during next week. The wind shall be easterly with speed around 15 m/s. MJO is expected to remain weak in the next two weeks but shall be in the Indian Ocean. Therefore, a slight enhancement is expected in rainfall due to this factor.

Hydro-meteorological Highlights , 07, June 2016

Highlights : Rainfall received in south western and central regions of the country during the previous week while up to 70 mm highest rainfall was seen around Opanayake and Balangoda on the 3rd. Up to 40 mm rainfall was received in south western and central regions of the country on the 30th and Gampaha and Colombo districts on 31st May. Other days were dry except 3rd June. NCEP model predicts up to 125 mm of rainfall in western province and surrounding cities in next week.

Highlights:


Rainfall during the previous week was concentrated in the south western region of the country. Kalutara district received the highest rainfall during the week (up to 160 mm). The surrounding districts and the south western sea received up to 100-120 mm rainfall. NOAA NCEP, IMD WRF and IRI CFS models predict more than 100 mm of rainfall in the south western region of the country in the next two weeks.
