Weekly Hydro-meteorological Report, 25, July 2019

                   Highlights       

                                 
·  The IRI weekly rainfall forecast predicts up to 75 mm of total rainfall in Jaffna district during 24 – 29 Jul.
·  Between 17 – 22 Jul: up to 90 mm of rainfall was recorded in Nuwara Eliya district on the 18th.
·  From 16 – 22 Jul: up to 54 km/h, northwesterly winds were experienced by the entire island.

Weekly Monitoring: On July 17th, Ratnapura district received up to 60 mm of rainfall; Nuwara Eliya, Kalutara, Galle and Matara districts up to 30 mm of rainfall; and Kegalle, Gampaha, Colombo, Kandy, Badulla, Monaragala and Hambantota districts up to 20 mm. On the 18th, Nuwara Eliya district received up to 90 mm of rainfall; Kandy and Badulla districts up to 60 mm; Kegalle, Ratnapura, Kalutara, Galle, Matara and Monaragala districts up to 50 mm; Colombo, Matale, Trincomalee, Ampara and Hambantota districts up to 30 mm; and Kurunegala and Gampaha districts up to 20 mm.  On the 19th, Jaffna district received up to 5 mm of rainfall. On the 20th, Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Kandy, Colombo, Badulla, Ratnapura and Nuwara Eliya districts received up to 5 mm of rainfall. On the 21st, Nuwara Eliya district received up to 40 mm of rainfall; Ratnapura, Monaragala and Badulla districts up to 20 mm; and most parts of the country up to 10 mm. On the 22nd, Jaffna and Kilinochchi districts received up to 10 mm of rainfall; and Ratnapura district up to 5 mm. 


Total Rainfall for the Past Week: The RFE 2.0 tool shows total up to 75-100 mm in Nuwara Eliya, Ratnapura and Galle districts; up to 50-75 mm in Kurunegala, Matale, Kandy, Kalutara, Badulla, Galle and Matara districts; and up to 10-25 mm in Puttalam, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Batticaloa and Trincomalee. Above average rainfall up to 50-100 mm is shown for Badulla, Nuwara Eliya, Ratnapura and Galle districts; and up to 25-50 mm in Kandy, Kegalle, Ampara, Monaragala and Matara districts

Pacific sea state: July 19, 2019
SSTs in the east-central Pacific declined to ENSO-neutral levels during early July, but still above average. Temperature anomalies of subsurface waters were near-average. Patterns in the atmosphere showed mainly ENSO-neutral to borderline El Niño conditions. Collective model forecasts favor ENSO-neutral through autumn, possibly returning to weak El Niño by winter. The official CPC/IRI outlook, still with an El Niño advisory, calls for a transition to ENSO-neutral by late summer, most likely remaining neutral through fall and winter.

Indian Ocean State

0.5 0C above average sea surface temperature was observed in the seas around Sri Lanka.

Weekly Hydro-meteorological Report, 18, July 2019

        Highlights       

                                 
·  The IRI weekly rainfall forecast predicts up to 220 mm of total rainfall in southwestern regions of the island during 17 – 22 Jul.
·  Between 10 – 16 Jul: up to 50 mm of rainfall was recorded in Ampara and Polonnaruwa districts on the 14th.
·  From 9 – 15 Jul: up to 36 km/h, northwesterly winds were experienced by the entire island.

Weekly Monitoring: On July 10th, Monaragala district received up to 40 mm of rainfall; Kurunegala, Batticaloa and Ampara districts up to 30 mm of rainfall; and Puttalam, Gampaha, Badulla and Hambantota districts up to 20 mm. On the 11th, Vavuniya district received up to 20 mm of rainfall.  On the 12th, Polonnaruwa, Matale, Ampara, Kandy and Badulla districts received up to 30 mm of rainfall; and Vavuniya, Anuradhapura, Trincomalee, Kurunegala, Kegalle, Nuwara Eliya, Ratnapura, Kalutara, Galle and Matara districts up to 20 mm. On the 13th, Ratnapura and Nuwara Eliya districts received up to 20 mm of rainfall. On the 14th, Ampara and Polonnaruwa districts received up to 50 mm of rainfall; Puttalam and Badulla districts up to 30 mm; and Kurunegala, Gampaha, Colombo, Ratnapura, Kalutara, Matale and Monaragala districts. No significant rainfalls were recorded in any part of the island on the 15th. On the 16th, Kalutara and Ratnapura districts received up to 20 mm of rainfall.

Some patterns in the atmosphere continue to show El Niño conditions intermittently. Collective model forecasts show a likely transition from weak El Niño conditions to ENSO-neutral by late summer. The official CPC/IRI outlook, still with an El Niño advisory, calls for a 60% chance of ENSO-neutral by Jul-Sep, and neutral remains the most likely category through fall and winter.

·  Between 2 – 8 Jul: up to 10 mm of rainfall was recorded in Kurunegala and Gampaha districts on the 2nd.
·  From 2 – 8 Jul: up to 54 km/h, westerly winds were experienced by the entire island.

Weekly Monitoring: On July 2nd, Kurunegala and Gampaha districts received up to 10 mm of rainfall; and Puttalam, Matale, Kegalle, Kandy, Colombo and Ratnapura districts up to 5 mm. On the 3rd, Hambantota, Monaragala and Ampara districts received up to 5 mm of rainfall.  No significant rainfalls were recorded in any part of the island during the period 4th - 5th. On the 6th, Mannar, Mullaitivu and Kilinochchi districts received up to 5 mm of rainfall. No significant rainfalls were recorded in any part of the island on the 7th. On the 8th, Badulla and Monaragala district received up to 5 mm of rainfall

Some patterns in the atmosphere show intermittent El Niño conditions. Collective model forecasts show a continuation of at least weak El Niño-level SSTs lasting through 2019. The official CPC/IRI outlook, with an El Niño advisory, calls for a 66% chance of El Niño continuing during Jun-Aug, decreasing to 50-55% for continuing through fall and winter.

·  Between 24 Jun – 1 Jul: up to 20 mm of rainfall was recorded in Kurunegala, Ratnapura and Batticaloa districts on the 24th.
·  From 26 Jun – 2 Jul: up to 54 km/h, northwesterly winds were experienced by the entire island.

Weekly Monitoring: On June 24th, Kurunegala, Ratnapura and Batticaloa districts received up to 20 mm of rainfall; and Polonnaruwa, Matale, Ampara, Monaragala, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Kegalle, Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Galle and Matara districts. On the 25th, Jaffna, Kilinonochchi, and Mullaitivu districts received up to 5 mm of rainfall.  On the 26th, Jaffna and Kilinochchi districts received up to 5 mm of rainfall. No significant rainfalls were recorded in any part of the island during the period 27th - 29th. On the 30th, Vavuniya, Anuradhapura and Trincomalee districts received up to 5 mm of rainfall.
