Hydro-meteorological Highlights ,25, July 2016

Highlights : During the previous week, the overall weather was dry except on 17th, 19th and 23rd. On the 17th 30 mm of rainfall was recorded in Passara and 20 mm of rainfall was received by the surrounding areas including Badulla town. On the 19th 20 mm of rainfall was received by Kahatagasdigiliya and Tammennawa areas in Anuradhapura district and 15 mm of rainfall was received by adjacent areas. Up to 15 mm of rainfall was recorded in Avissawella and Deraniyagala areas while less than 10 mm was received by Kalutara, Colombo , Nuawara Eliya and upper Ratnapura areas on 23rd. During the week from 17-23rd July, lowest temperature of 15-20 oC was recorded in Nuwara Eliya while maximum temperature of 25-40 oC was recorded in Eastern side of the country. 28-36 km/h north westerly wind was observed at the 850 mb level. Considerable rainfall is expected in the week from 25th-31st July. On 25th 70-140 mm of rainfall is expected in the western sea a few kilometers away from Colombo and Kalutara while up to 70 mm of rainfall is expected in the remaining parts of the western sea. On the same day up to 40 mm of rainfall is expected in Mulativu and 10-20 mm of rainfall is expected in the Eastern side of the country and Moneragala area. Heavy rainfall is expected in several areas of the country on 26th. On that day, 70-140 mm of rainfall is expected in western sea close to Gampaha and up to 70 mm of rainfall is expected in the western and south western coastal band including Chilaw, Colombo, Kalutara, Beruwala, Galle and the adjacent sea. On the same day, up to 70 mm rainfall is expected close to Balangoda and Nuwara Eliya and up to 40 mm of rainfall is expected in the adjacent areas as well as in Badulla and Moneragala. Very heavy rainfall is expected in western coastal band and the western sea on the 27th. Up to 140 mm rainfall is expected in the western sea close to Gampaha and Colombo and up to 70 mm rainfall is expected in the remaining part of the western sea and the western coastal band from Chilaw to Galle. Up to 40 mm of rainfall is expected close to Nuwara Eliya and Ratnapura and the sea adjacent to Mulaltivu and Trincomalee towns. From 28th-29th Up to 40 mm rainfall is expected in the western coastal towns including Chilaw, Colombo and Galle and the adjacent sea. The intensity of the rainfall is seen to be decreasing on the 30th. Up to 40 mm rainfall is expected in the sea close to Colombo and Kalutara while rainfall of less than 20 mm is expected in the rest of the western sea and the coastal belt. As usual, lowest temperature is expected in Nuwara Eliya to be around 15-20 oC and maximum temperature is expected in the eastern side of the island to be around 35-40 oC. 20-28 km/h westerly wind is expected in the lower half of the country at 850 mb level.
