Weekly Hydro-meteorological Report, 14, January 2016
Highlights:
During the week 6th – 12th January, ocean near Kattankudy received the highest rainfall up to 180 mm on 6th January while Relatively high rainfall was observed in several regions in Batticaloa, Ampara and Polonnaruwa on the same day. No significant rainfall was observed during the rest of week. NOAA NCEP models predict decrease of rainfall during next week in the entire country. MJO shall be in phase 1 which shall enhance rainfall conditions in Sri Lanka.

Highlights:
During the week 26th December – 1st January, highest rainfall was observed in western region of Kilinochchi and the ocean near Delft Island on 27th December. Relatively high rainfall was observed in several regions in Matale, Moneragala and Badulla. NOAA NCEP models predict increase of rainfall during next week in south eastern region. MJO phase is in 7 and shall suppress rainfall of the country significantly. A continuation of strong El NiƱo conditions is predicted by the IRI and therefore in January the rainfall shall be low.

Highlights:
Slight decrease of rainfall was observed in the entire country in the week 23rd – 29th December. Highest rainfall was observed in western region of Kilinochchi and the ocean near Delft Island on 27th December. Relatively high rainfall was observed in several regions in Matale, Moneragala and Badulla. NOAA NCEP models predict increase of rainfall during next week. MJO phase is in 6 and shall continue to slightly suppress rainfall of the country.

Highlights:
As predicted in the previous week there was a significant decrease in rainfall in the entire country. NOAA NCEP models predict that the rainfall shall decrease further in the next two weeks. The highest rainfall observed this week was on the 17th near the district boundary separating Anuradhapura and Mannar districts. Apart from that the coastal region from Trincomalee to Kalmunai received relatively high rainfall. High sea surface temperature is observed in the entire Indian Ocean. The MJO is still in phase 5 and shall continue to suppress rainfall slightly.

Highlights:
High rainfall continued in the entire country during 8th- 14th December week as well but there was a slight decrease in rainfall compared to previous weeks. Heaviest rainfall was recorded on the 14th this week where Gampaha and Badulla districts received very heavy rainfall. NOAA and IRI CFS models predict a significant decrease in the rainfall in the fortnight starting from the 16th. However the MJO is in phase 4 which shall slightly enhance rainfall conditions. IRI further predicts that there shall be below average rainfall during the first quarter of 2016 with 50% probability.

Highlights:
Heavy rainfall was observed in the entire country during the 1st- 7th December 2015. The Sea around the country also received extremely heavy rainfall during this week. NOAA NCEP models predict a decrease in the rainfall in northern and north central regions of the country but very heavy rainfall shall continue in the eastern region during the next two weeks. The sea surface temperature around the country is neutral. The MJO shall be in phases 5 and 6 during the next week which shall suppress rainfall.

Weekly Hydro-meteorological Report, 03 December, 2015
Highlights:
Heavy rainfall was observed in the last few days throughout the country due to a low pressure area in the Bay of Bengal. Up to 40 mm rainfall was observed in northern and eastern regions of the country during the time period 25th November – 1st December. Heavy rainfall up to 160 mm was observed in ocean near Puttalam and up to 130 mm in ocean near Trincomalee on 1st December. Rainfall up to 110 mm was observed around Sinharaja Forest Reserve on 30th November. NOAA NCEP models predict rainfall excess of 135 mm in the northern, north central and central regions of the country. The rest of the country too shall receive high rainfall (about 95 mm) Very heavy rainfall is predicted for the area around Badulla in the next few days by IRI CFS models.
